A tooth extraction isn’t anyone’s favorite part of the dental experience—but with the right aftercare, healing can be smooth and manageable. One of the most common questions is: when can I eat after a tooth extraction?
The short answer? Fairly soon. But what you eat—and how you eat—makes a big difference in your recovery.
The First Few Hours Matter Most
After your extraction, Dr. Miller or Dr. Doppenberg will place gauze over the site and ask you to bite down gently. This helps form a blood clot, which is essential for healing. During this initial stage—typically the first three to four hours—you’ll want to avoid eating altogether. Let the clot stabilize.
Once the bleeding slows and the numbness wears off, you can start introducing liquids and soft foods.
Start With Soft and Cool
Stick to soft, non-acidic, non-spicy foods for the first 24 hours. Options like applesauce, yogurt, pudding, mashed potatoes, or a protein-rich smoothie (no straw—more on that below) are ideal. Cold or lukewarm temperatures are best. Hot food or drinks can disrupt the clot and delay healing.
Avoid chewing directly near the extraction site. Let the area rest while you eat on the opposite side of your mouth.
Skip These for Now
Here’s what to hold off on for at least a few days: crunchy snacks, seeds, chips, nuts, sticky candy, or anything that needs serious chewing. These can irritate the healing site or get stuck in the socket.
And absolutely no straws. Sucking motion can dislodge the clot and lead to a painful complication called dry socket. The same goes for smoking or vigorous rinsing—both can set you back in the healing process.
Easing Back Into a Normal Diet
Most people can start reintroducing more solid foods after 3–5 days, depending on how they feel and how well the site is healing. If discomfort persists, stick with soft foods a little longer. Everyone heals at a different pace.
